A new Learning Policy Institute Report tells us what we knew along. In a piece authored for Education Week’s ‘On California’ blog, I write how supporting teachers and making their jobs decent will solve both the teacher shortage and teacher quality problems.

I just read the article, “Teachers with Drive” (Coggins & Diffenbaugh, 2013) in which similar ideas were discussed about new teachers and how to maintain motivation in veteran teachers.

    I just wanted to say thank you for sharing this article because it was a really insightful read. The 5 leading factors to enter, remain or leave this profession made a lot of sense. Teachers need to feel supported by their superiors and be given what is needed to do their jobs properly. They also need to be apart of the decision making as well – professional collaborations are important to educational advancements. I do believe formal, standardized assessment is necessary but it should not be the be-all, end-all of a child’s education. Increased salary is something I think every prospective and active teacher is looking to create for themselves. If more people joined in on the points of this article, more conversations and viewpoints will be heard to create reform.
