Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire. William Butler Yeats on Education

I am a college professor who has taught at both 2 year and 4 year colleges. I specialize in teaching developmental English courses, but I focus my efforts on igniting the passion for learning. I champion the curious questioner, I defend the inner idealist, and I encourage the stymied student. I have heard many reasons for feeling inadequate in the classroom, and I work to stamp out each of those reasons through a building up of strengths within my students. I am a firm believer that our ways of schooling need true reformation. It is my experience that for many people our best moments of education occurred prior to becoming good at "school." And I want to help create the learning environment that all of us hope to see our current school system transformed into. A new system that encourages inquiry, experimentation, cultural exploration, and growth.

Education interests and goals

Other interests:

Game Theory, Anthropology, Language Use and Acquisition, just to name a few.

One positive change I hope to see in our schools:

I would love to see a shift away from the "one right answer" model and a move toward the exploration of interests in the classroom.  Though exploration is difficult to measure because it is boundless, its benefits are countless.

What I’m learning about now:

I am currently studying motivational techniques related to video game theory and exploring course redesign from a strengths-based approach rather than a deficiency model.  This summer I will be delving into project-based learning, and in the fall, I will be piloting a mastery-focused writing curriculum of my own design.

My current leadership goal:

I am hoping to find the proper forum to effectively enter the active discourse of teaching methods in America and find new ways to bridge the separation gap between prek-12 and post-secondary institutions.  There needs to be a healthy open and honest discourse between all members of the p-20 community.

I would be very interested in a hybrid role that allowed me to:

develop innovatitve teaching practices for myself and other teachers and advocate for a culture-focused education reform.
