New Slide: Teacher-Dependent Learners

As a part of a workshop this week, I had the chance to read a 2012 article about text-dependent questioning written by Doug Fisher and Nancy Frey.

While the entire bit was fantastic — it details several specific questioning strategies that teachers can use to get students to truly wrestle with text at a deeper level — one quote really stood out to me:

    Teacher-Dependent Students

    This hits home as we enter our second week of school–one group of juniors in Am Lit that I have taught for the last two years in English–are boo-hooing and complaining and want spoon-fed. For example, they expect me to show them MLA format heading for an essay. I refused and sent them to OWL at Perdue University. After two entire years with me, it is their job to learn it–nothing I can do to “teach” them how to do it anymore.

    They waste class time chattering and fooling around and expect no homework. So what am I doing to stop these teacher-dependent little lazybones? I am refusing to cut them any slack and holding them (with their grades) accountable to step up and work.

    It is powerful stuff, Bill! I had a “duh” moment when I read your slide, but the more I thought about it, the more I realized that I’m guilty of jdoing just that. Jennifer Barnett commented to me last week that she felt success as a parent (or teacher) came when she was no longer necessary. I’ve been struggling to get my head around that idea. If I’m not necessary, then what purpose do I serve? The point was driven home further for me this morning when I read a Tweet that said (in a nutshell) – we do our kids a disservice when we expect them to make life-altering decisions as they prepare for college and the workforce yet have made them ask permission to use the restroom up until about a month before. I’d like read more of your thoughts on how we achieve a teacher-independent generation without making our role obsolete! No pressure 🙂
