Teacherpreneur Julie Hiltz wins Governor's Shine Award

CTQ teacherpreneur Julie Hiltz, a media specialist at Lutz Elementary in Hillsborough County, Florida, received the Governor’s Shine Award in a statewide ceremony in Tampa today.

The award highlights Florida educators "who go above and beyond the call of duty in pursuit of educational excellence." Governor Rick Scott presents medals to recipients throughout the year to show appreciation for Florida’s exceptional teachers and their commitment to improving the state's education system. Julie, a National Board Certified Teacher, was nominated by her principal, Mary Fernandez.

Thanks to a partnership between CTQ and Hillsborough County Public Schools, Julie has served as a teacherpreneur for the past two years. This hybrid role combines her work as a media specialist with her leadership of efforts to maximize teachers' professional learning, benefiting students in Florida and beyond.

For past two years, she has been spearheading development of CTQ-FL, a network of Florida teacher leaders. This group is preparing to launch a statewide campaign to encourage K-12 practitioners to recognize and refine their own skills as teacher leaders. Julie also serves as a mentor to new media specialists across her her district.

But Julie's reach extends far beyond her state's boundaries. For example, during national Teacher Appreciation Week last year, Julie and teacher Jaraux Washington initiated #TeachingIs, a social media campaign that reached millions with compelling content about the complexity of teaching. Julie has also taken part in an international group of teacher leaders convened by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the Sutton Trust to share best practices and generate concrete recommendations for developing high-quality teacher feedback systems.

In addition to blogging on the CTQ website, Julie has written about education policy in The Washington Post's Answer Sheet Blog, Education Week Teacher, and elsewhere.

CTQ will soon release a case study that documents the impact and trajectory of Julie's leadership. Join our email list to be alerted to its publication.

Note as of 3/3/15Julie's case study is now published.
