Imagine an orchestra warming up for a performance. Every musician has a job, a specialty: tuba, timpani, and violin. The conductor taps his wand, and the orchestra starts.

But somewhere, in the brass section, there is a failure. The third trumpet is out of key, and the fourth trumpet starts playing music from the wrong page. The music falls apart.

What is a good school?


One of the things I love about teaching my college students in my Foundations of Education class is helping them to grapple with the same types of questions teachers everywhere ask themselves every day. It is one of the reasons I love the Collaboratory too. As a teacher in the transformed learning ecology we describe in Teaching 2030, I am continually transformed as I learn from from my students, just as the learn from me and each other.

Flipped Classroom Perspective


 At this time of year, I find myself orchestrating a return to a sense of awareness of the perspectives of others. When I am at home (in between conferences, family visits, and trips) over the summer, I often revert to a more natural state of being. I know who I am, what I am feeling, where I need to be, and how to meet the needs of my family.

Dear Teachers That Walk the Talk


Dear Teacher,

If you walk with us, we walk together, no matter the destination.

I wanted to share a few thoughts on what teaching is to me in the form of a love note. Not surprisingly, these beliefs lay across the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards' Five Core Propositions like a warm, fuzzy blanket. As I've been renewing my certification this spring, I've been reflecting on how enacting these propositions, on a daily basis in my practice, is both a challenge and a calling for me.
