Torment for a new generation...

I think what has crossed my mind since the Virginia Tech tragedy has been the lack of serious consequences for bullying and harrassment in many schools today. Instead of taking a stand against the kind of callous treatment that has become commonplace in many children, we consistently downplay the kinds of abuse that happens in our schoolhouses. "That's just the nature of middle school," we'll say.

Saying goodbye to Maria

It's been a difficult day for me because I just learned that yet another remarkable colleague is leaving education. Maria is young and motivated--having served as a cooperating teacher and accepting positions on school level leadership teams--yet she's been dissatisfied for a while now. "I'm 28," she told me, "and I'm afraid I'm going to get locked into the classroom if I don't make a change now."

You kid are an A+...or are you?

Grading has been something that I've wrestled with as a teacher for the better part of my fourteen-year career.  Teaching Language Arts--a subject that is highly subjective in nature--has made it difficult to feel as if I'm accurately assessing the true abilities of my students.  Determining the finer shades between "A" work and "B" work has been a constant battle.

Still more on school choice...

I don't know if you've been following the conversation that two of my readers Jake and Mike are having over on my "More on School Choice" post, but I've really been challenged by their thinking.  Both are clearly delinating two alternative positions about what is quickly becoming a critical issue in education.  Their thoughts are worth a read for everyone involved in educational policy conversations.
