Teacher Recruitment

The South Carolina Teacher Cadet Program is a powerful recruitment program to attract academically able high school and college students to teaching.

Over the last fifteen years, the South Carolina Teacher Cadet Program has attracted over 20,000 students, 10 percent of whom are currently teaching in the state’s public schools. While still in high school, prospective recruits take a year-long, rigorous college credit-bearing course that offers substantial content on child development, teacher education, and the teaching profession.

The state enrolls approximately 2200 students in the program annually, of whom 37 percent indicate that they intend to enter teaching. This successful program costs only $130 per student.
