Performance-Pay for Teachers:
Designing a System that Students Deserve
Few policymakers or researchers dispute that teachers are the most important determinant of student achievement. However, across America, little consensus exists on the best way to recruit, prepare, and reward teachers. Like the dusty blackboards still found in some school classrooms, the single salary schedule has served its purposes, met its goals, and outlived its usefulness. The TeacherSolutions team, comprised of some of the nation’s most accomplished educators, has developed a bold performance pay framework – one that students deserve.
We at the Center for Teaching Quality are honored to present you with the inaugural TeacherSolutions report Performance-Pay for Teachers: Designing a System that Students Deserve. With generous support from the Joyce Foundation and additional funding from the Gund and Stuart Foundations, 18 highly accomplished teachers from across America have spent the last year studying past and current efforts to create alternative pay models. Performance-Pay for Teachers offers new and different solutions based on their understanding of the professional work of teachers and the needs of the students, families, and communities they serve.
While this report has been a year in the making, it is only TeacherSolutions’ first step in transforming teaching and learning by improving and updating teacher pay. This year, 16 expert teacher-leaders from Chicago, Cleveland and Milwaukee have joined the national TeacherSolutions team to study its comprehensive teacher development and pay framework and apply it to their unique districts.
