The Future of Teacher Education

The differences between alternative routes into teaching and traditional schools of education are smaller than the extreme positions on either side of the debate would have us believe.  In the final BestTQ of 2006, the Center for Teaching Quality (CTQ) argues that dramatically improving our nation’s teaching force and increasing the number of quality educators in our hardest-to-staff schools will require an influx of well-prepared and dedicated teachers from both traditional and alternative routes into the profession.

Rather than focus on the shortcomings of some preparation programs on both sides of the debate, CTQ highlights promising practices from both routes to teaching and recommends policy solutions for going to scale with what we know works in preparing teachers.
