Reforming High Schools Must Start With Teachers

The effort to redesign the American high school is gaining considerable momentum from researchers, policymakers, philanthropists and educators. CTQ commends efforts to provide a high school experience more relevant to what students must learn to succeed in the 21st Century. This current edition of Best Teaching Quality Practices considers how teaching quality improvements could and must become more central to high school reform efforts. This piece characterizes, and makes recommendations for ensuring, quality teaching in the specific context of redesigned high schools. Reformers should realize that even the most effectively redesigned high schools still depend on teaching excellence to improve student learning.
